Hey there! Here is my personal list. I hope it helps in any way. ^^
HORROR: Another, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (all seasons). Both have TONS AND TONS OF BLOOD AND BIZARRE DEATHS and they’re great for this very same reason. Another has 13 episodes and Higurashi has 2 seasons of 26 plus a bunch of OVAs.
ROMANCE: Saikano (a bit sci-fi, really sad in some moments, and a bit old. 12 episodes), Kimi ni Todoke (I DON’T EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN THIS ONE. Two seasons, 26 and 13 episodes).
SCI-FI: Ergo Proxy (brilliant, a good mindfuck, and a beautiful trace. 26 episodes), Ghost in the Shell (a classic. Three movies, two different animes [Stand Alone Complex and Solid State Society]. Haven’t watched everything yet but it’s still really good.)
SLICE OF LIFE / MISC: Working!! (soft comedy, really cute and funny. Two seasons, 13 episodes each), Beck Mongolian Chop Squad (best soundtrack ever, which is perfect for an anime whose theme is music. 26 episodes plus a live-action movie I didn’t bring myself to watch yet).
TEARJERKERS (yes, this is an acceptable genre :’D): Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (perfect in all levels, but may be shocking in a few moments. 11 episodes), Ano Hana (I don’t need to explain this one either. 13 episodes). BONUS: Grave of the Fireflies (movie).
SHOUNEN / ACTION: Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann (a classic of mecha and massive explosions. 27 episodes plus a movie), Persona 4: The Animation (coming from the game, really well adapted, although the art is a little shitty. 26 episodes), Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night (legendary spirits fighting each other. Both have 26 episodes. For F/SN, there’s also a movie, which manages to be better than the entire series, but we don’t really talk about it.). BONUS: Puella Magi Madoka Magica (13 episodes. I won’t say anything about this one. Watch it and take your own conclusions. And yes, I know it’s not a fucking shounen, but I wouldn’t have any other category to put it)
COMEDY: School Rumble (a classic, too. Scholar comedy with clumsy girls and misunderstood boys. Two seasons of 26 episodes plus 3 OVAs), Baka to Test (same as before, only watched the first season, 13 episodes), Furi Kuri (MANDATORY RECOMENDATION, six episodes of pure insanity). BONUS: OBVIOUSLY, EVERYTHING RELATED TO HETALIA IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED IT YET.
